A Work in Progress: Behavior Management Strategies and a Curriculum for Intensive Behavioral Treatment of Autism, John McEachin, Ron Leaf, and other authors. McEachin and Leaf have decades of experience in this area. This book is new ('99). A "must read" for those involved in behavioral intervention. Reviews at Amazon.com. Also available in Spanish:

Let Me Hear Your Voice: A Family's Triumph Over Autism by Catherine Maurice. Maurice writes of the shock of her children's diagnoses and how they both improved through ABA therapy. Her book is a powerful testimony to the benefits of ABA.

A Parent's Guide to Autism: Answers to the Most Common Questions by Charles A. Hart, whose brother and son both have autism. Hart discusses different treatments. A good book for families of newly-diagnosed children.

Right from the Start: Behavioral Intervention for Young Children With Autism : A Guide for Parents and Professionals  by Sandra L. Harris and Mary Jane Weiss. "This guide begins by discussing applied behavioral analysis (ABA), the central component of intensive behavioral intervention. Readers learn how ABA can be used to teach speech and language, social, motor, and adaptive skills through a system of repetition, reward, and goal adjustment."

Pervasive Developmental Disorders: Finding a Diagnosis and Getting Help by Mitzi Waltz. Focuses primarily on PDD. Topics include preparing for a diagnostic interview, descriptions of diagnostic tests, and treatments such as medications, vitamins and supplements, sensory integration, and speech and occupational therapies.

Thinking in Pictures and Other Reports from My Life with Autism by Temple Grandin. Dr. Grandin, an animal scientist, may be the most well-known person with autism in the U.S. Although her experience may not be as universal as she supposes, she offers fascinating insights into how someone with autism thinks and perceives the world.

Parent Survival Manual: A Guide to Crisis Resolution in Autism and Related Developmental Disorders , edited by Eric Schopler, Ph.D., founder, Division TEACCH at University of North Carolina. (The TEACCH method is used in many schools). Based on interviews with parents and behavioral experts, this book provides solutions to common  problems involving aggression, communication, hygiene, social skills, eating, and sleep.

Living with a Brother or Sister with Special Needs: A Book for Sibs by Donald Meyer and Patricia Vadasy. For children aged 4 to 8 who have a sibling with a disability. Meyer is known for "Sibshops" workshops.

Someone Special, Just Like You by Tricia Brown. A lovely book about understanding disabilities. Suitable for young children.

Siblings of Children with Autism: A Guide for Families by Sandra L. Harris, Ph.D. Advice on helping siblings cope, from the founder of the Douglass school for children with autism.

Teach Me Language: A Language Manual for Children with Autism, Asperger's Syndrome and Related Developmental Disorders by Sabrina K. Freeman, Lorelei Dake and Isaac Tamir. A how-to book with instructions, games and cards designed to teach language to children with autistic spectrum disorders who are visual learners. A speech pathology approach.
